In being almost half way through September, the October Breast Cancer Awareness is fast approaching and fundraising has already began. With the use of technology, fundraising has become a little bit easier in regards to spreading the news faster and to more people and reaching an audience that may not have been reached otherwise. This week we discussed technology and mobile programs that assist professional, intercollegiate and other sport organizations with fundraising functions. The Susan G. Komen foundation is a great example of how fundraising for sport organizations correlates with technology.
Fundraising isn’t just monetary donations, but could be used for gifts and other ideas as well. “The importance of fundraising is determined by the financial position of the organization. If the existing monetary status of the program warrants fundraising, the athletic organization’s uses for contribution, gifts and donations can be unlimited” (Leonard, 2012. Pg.4 ). Have you been a part of a Breast Cancer Awareness organization? Are you participating for a friend or because you are directly affected by this disease? Regardless of the amount of participation you put forward, any participation is your contribution to fighting this disease yourself and with thousands of women all over the country.
I was very fortunate to have helped with this fundraiser at the school that I coached volleyball at. Unfortunately, one of the teachers that taught my players had been diagnosed with Breast Cancer and we wanted to find a way to give back to her after giving to us and our growth in learning for numerous years. Along with multiple other schools in the area, Volley for the Cure was a night in which we celebrated life with multiple individuals who were beating or had already beaten this disease and coming together as a community to support those people and our volleyball teams.
During this game, both teams (home and visitors) wore pink and white shirts that were donated by local organizations and all proceeds along with other donations went to a centralized fund that would be later donated to the Susan G Komen fundraiser. With the help of technology and social media, the school, team and surrounding players, coaches, family and friends were able to raise almost $10,000 by getting donations from all over the local area from businesses and community members that couldn’t make it to the game. It was a magical moment for our community and most importantly our guest of honor, Ms. Beck. What can you do to spread the word for fundraising for a cause? Have you had a successful fundraiser through the use of technology? Donating can be a click away with online “Go Fund Me” accounts or even through the Susan G Komen site (which I have listed below). Any contribution can make a difference!
