The Tony Hawk Skate Park foundation is a great outlet for kids that live in low income areas to have a release of energy that could potentially keep them from harm and trouble. Personally, I think this is a fantastic idea for kids to get involved, bond over something they like doing and have in common as well as getting exercise and enjoying a sport that isn’t that common especially in schools. Growing up, we didn’t have skate parks where I lived and honestly, skateboarding around town was prohibited in most areas for the fear of damaging buildings or children getting hurt. Skateboarding provides users with hand eye coordination, endurance, full body workout as well as a whole lot of balance!
When researching the site to find grants to build in a low income city, the site was very easy to navigate and find the rules and regulations for getting grants and applying for a city in your area based on income eligibility. I wanted to research the area that I currently live in Charleston, South Carolina. Based on the criteria of the grant application, the average income is $5,000 dollars lower than the average for the state of South Carolina coming in at 39,000 a year. North Charleston is where the Air Force Base is located and being a military family, I think it is important to have somewhere safe and fun that children would be able to go (such as a skate park) and get to know other military families and families that live nearby.
The average income for North Charleston is 39,322 and there are 23.4% of individuals living in North Charleston that live below poverty level and there are 42,656 housing units. If a skate park was provided in an area right outside of base (which is particularly a good part of town), that could bring in children from the local neighborhoods as well as all children who live on base. This could cater towards multiple people and would be convenient and an incentive for kids to come together, bond and learn a new sport.
