In every situation whether it be in a personal or professional manner communication is essential for success for all parties involved. When communication fails, so does the team. The Penn State sex scandal incident is not exception to this “rule”. When information was blasted all over social media, there were so many different rumors spread around regarding the true story of what happened between Penn State coaches and football players that had played through their program. Was it true? Did the head coach know about it? How many people were affected and have they all come to light after the first person volunteered the initial information? Why now, after so many years of keeping it inside, why share this vital, horrific information now? So many questions running through heads and all over media casts and social media that people want answers for.
Social media plays a large part in situations like this because people from all around the world can commentate instantly and express themselves without having to actually have face to face communication with these groups of people. Haven’t you ever seen a key word or hashtag that is “trending”? What about subjects that are suggested or advertised in your news feed? Comments and opinions (regardless if they are right or wrong) spread like wild fire on social media which is why containing and addressing that information is crucial for a scandal such as this. They don’t want the public to get any wrong information and want everyone to know, the manner is being addressed and actions are taking place.
Pictures are blasted all over the internet and comments are being taken out of context. From an article about the scandal, the defense against this was the allegations were too old and action shouldn’t be taking place. Opinions on that spread quickly over social media (both positive and negative) in regards to what had happened and fortunately those opinions could not be used in a legal manner.
