Crisis Communication Plan: Penn State University
- Initial call goes directly to 911 or campus security
- When wrong sexual activity was being displayed amongst the players and coaches, a 911 call should have taken place and authorities involved
- Campus President/Campus Police/Chief Communications Officers examine the situation, parties involved and what action then needs to take place
- Authorities should involve all parties involved and in this case parents or legal guardians of the players because they were under the legal age for legal action
- Vice President of Relations and Director Of Media Relations
- They will hold a press conference addressing this issue via television cast, radio cast and social media so rumors don’t get carried out of hand and the public/NCAA knows action and investigation will take place for such a hurtful crime. Since the victims went to the media, this needs to be handled via the media
- Responsibilities of all parties involved
- There needs to be someone in charge of each aspect of the investigation including who will be talking to the media, legal obligations and therapy/counseling for victims
- Legal obligations and lawyers
- Social media blast- scandal control
- Communicate counseling and medical services for those in need
- For the victims as well as the coaches who committed the crimes
- Follow up press conferences
- Letting the public/conference/NCAA know where the University stands on the issue and future action and prevention going forward
- Addressing penalties and suspensions due to the circumstances at hand from a legal standpoint, from the institution and the NCAA
- Evaluate efforts afterwards and report. Consider changes as needed
